I guess I just love old,dusty, forgotten things.
We trekked out on Saturday to Lexington, searching for books. We went to 3 antique stores with no luck.
We went in to Blackthorn Antiques. He told us about an bookseller who had set up shop in the old post office. Let me tell you it was an amazing treasure trove of books. New and old. I was in book heaven!
We nosed around and picked up 2 old books from 1884. They were old copies of Punch, or the London Charivari magazine. When she told us that the books only cost $4.00 I about died.
Good prices. We picked up 2 bags full!
Punch, or the London Charivari was a British weekly magazine of humour and satire established in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and engraver Ebenezer Landells. Historically, it was most influential in the 1840s and 50s, when it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration. The two editors took for their name and masthead the anarchic glove puppet, Mr. Punch, of Punch and Judy; the name also referred to a joke made early on about one of the magazine's first editors, Lemon, that "punch is nothing without lemon".
As far as I'm concerned Punch is one ugly dude. The illustrations though are quite cool.
John Tenniel who created the illustrations for Alice In Wonderland is one of the many artists that worked for the magazine.
